Travel Insurance and Visas: When Coverage Is Mandatory
2026-07-13
For a growing list of destinations, travel insurance is not advice — it's a visa document. Miss it and the application stops at intake.
Where it's mandatory
Schengen leads: minimum 30,000 EUR medical coverage, valid in all member states, covering repatriation. Several Gulf, Asian and Latin American states require proof at the eVisa stage or on arrival, sometimes selling a state policy at the border at tourist prices.
What consulates check
Coverage amount, exact trip dates, territorial validity ("Schengen states" wording), zero or clearly stated deductible, and the applicant's name matching the passport. A screenshot of a cart is not a certificate — upload the issued policy PDF.
Choosing a policy that passes
Buy from insurers that issue instant visa-letter certificates, allow free date changes (refusals happen), and cover the activities you'll actually do. Annual multi-trip policies pay off after two trips for frequent flyers.
Tie it to the visa rule
Insurance requirements ride on top of visa status: visa-free entries often skip the check, eVisas embed it. See which category applies to your trip in the instant visa checker, then read the destination page — for example Turkey — and, if you're comparing bases as a remote worker, our digital nomad visa guide covers the insurance thresholds those programs demand.
