Do You Need a Visa Just to Change Planes? What Decides It

Transit is the gap in most travellers' planning, because the assumption is intuitive and wrong: I am not entering the country, so nothing applies.

Whether you need permission to pass through depends on four things, and only one of them is about the country itself.

An empty glass-walled airport walkway between terminals

What "transit" actually means

There is a distinction that does most of the work here.

Sterile transit — you remain inside the international zone of the airport, never cross the immigration desk, and board your onward flight from the same secure area. Legally, in many countries, you have not entered.

Entering to transit — you cross immigration, even briefly. This happens when you change terminals through a public area, when you must collect and re-check baggage, when you leave to stay overnight, or when the airport simply has no sterile transit route between your arrival and departure gates.

The moment you cross the immigration desk, you are subject to that country's entry rules — the same rules PassportGrade shows on the country pages, not a lighter transit version of them.

The four things that decide it

1. Your nationality

Some countries require an airport transit visa from holders of specific passports even for sterile transit. This is nationality-based and is not related to how long you are there. It is also the factor least visible to the traveller, because it is rarely mentioned on booking sites.

2. Whether a sterile route exists

This is physical, not legal. Some airports have no secure connection between certain terminals. If your arrival terminal and departure terminal are not connected airside, you must enter the country to move between them — whatever the rules say about transit in principle.

Check the airport's own terminal map, not the airline's booking flow.

3. Your baggage

If your bags are checked through to the final destination, you usually stay airside. If they are not — common when the two flights are on separate tickets, or on airlines without an interline agreement — you must collect them at the belt, which is past immigration.

A separate-ticket connection is the single most reliable predictor that you will have to enter.

4. Connection time

A long layover can force you out of the sterile area, because some airports close transit facilities overnight or do not permit indefinite stays airside.

The five scenarios

Separate tickets, bags not through-checkedYesFull entry requirements, plus time to clear and re-check

How to check your own connection

Work through it in this order:

Why the dataset cannot answer this one

PassportGrade records whether a passport can enter a destination and under which category. It does not record transit permission, because transit rules are a separate framework with their own exemption lists — and because the answer depends on airport layout and baggage handling, which are not country attributes at all.

So the country pages are the right place to look once you know you will cross immigration, and the wrong place to look for whether you will.

The expensive mistake

The common failure is booking a connection with a short layover on separate tickets, discovering at the arrival airport that the bags must be collected, and finding that collecting them requires a visa you do not have. At that point there is no good option: you cannot reach the departure gate, and you cannot legally cross the hall.

Check it when you book, when the itinerary can still be changed cheaply.
