Single Entry or Multiple Entry — Can You Leave and Come Back?

A single-entry visa is not a visa for one trip. It is a visa for one admission. The moment you cross the border outward, it is spent — even if you meant to be gone for an afternoon, and even if the validity date is months away.

This is the field most travellers skip, and it is the one that strands people on the wrong side of a border.

What the field means

On a visa sticker or approval, look for number of entries. The usual values:

Visa-free entry is normally multiple by nature, but not always unlimited in effect: several countries cap total days within a rolling period, so repeated re-entry does not reset the clock. That is a different limit, covered in visa validity is not length of stay.

What counts as leaving

More than people expect:

What usually does not count as leaving:

The decisive question is not distance or duration. It is whether you were processed out by immigration. If your passport was stamped on exit, you left.

Where routes go wrong

The side trip. A single-entry visa for a country, plus a planned two-day excursion to a neighbour, plus a return. The return is a second admission, and the visa no longer permits it.

The regional tour. A route that re-enters the same country twice — in, out to a neighbour, back in to fly home from the main hub. Very common, and it needs at least double entry.

The border run. Leaving and immediately re-entering to restart a permitted stay. Beyond needing multiple entry, this is treated with suspicion in a number of countries and can result in a shorter admission or a refusal. It is not a reliable way to extend a stay.

The common travel area assumption. Some groups of countries operate shared external borders, so movement between them is not an exit. Others look similar on a map but are entirely separate. Assuming the first when the second is true is how a single entry gets consumed by a train ride. Check the specific countries on your route — do not generalise from a region.

A decision tree before you book

If you are already there and realise

If you hold a single entry and your plan requires a second admission, the fix is arranged before you leave, not at the border on your way back. Depending on the country that may mean a new visa applied for from inside, or applying from the neighbouring country, or changing the route. The one approach that reliably fails is turning up at the border and explaining.
