Why check visa requirements before booking?

Every year, thousands of travellers lose non-refundable flights and hotel bookings for one simple reason: they discovered too late that they needed a visa. Checking requirements before paying takes thirty seconds and saves you a costly cancellation — or a denial at the boarding gate.

Visa policies change constantly as countries sign new agreements. A destination that required an embassy visa last year may offer full exemption or a fast eVisa today — and vice versa. Make checking a habit before every trip, even to destinations you have visited before.

The three types of entry requirements

Entry requirements worldwide fall into three main categories, each with different procedures, costs and timelines:

• Visa-free: enter with just your passport; the permitted stay is set on arrival (usually 30–180 days). Fastest and cheapest.
• Visa on arrival: issued at the airport or border for a fee, with no advance application. Carry accepted cash and a photo.
• eVisa & eTA: a quick online application before travel — approval typically within minutes to days, no embassy visit. The fastest-growing route worldwide.
• Embassy visa: the slowest — documents, an appointment and sometimes an interview, taking weeks. Start very early.

The smart pre-travel checklist

Even with a valid visa, entries are refused daily for easily avoidable reasons. Review this list before every trip:

• Passport validity of 6+ months from your entry date — the most common reason for refusal.
• Enough blank pages for stamps (at least two for some countries).
• Transit rules: some airports require a transit visa even without leaving the terminal — check every stopover.
• Proof of onward travel and accommodation: an exit ticket and hotel booking may be requested at the gate.
• Matching details: the name on your ticket must exactly match your passport.
